Cork is the Republic of Ireland's 'Second City' and the administrative centre for the County of Cork. The River Lee flows through the city forming an island around the town centre and the oldest part of the city. Although Cork is an important seaport, it is also a vibrant university town with the highly acclaimed University College Cork (UCC) located in the Southwest of the city.
A historic rivalry with Dublin has resulted in Cork’s reputation as a rebellious area and its residents often refer to Cork as the ‘real capital of Ireland’ or the ‘peoples republic of Cork’.
Because of its strategic importance with trade, the culture and language of Cork has been influenced by many different cultures, especially the Scandinavians and the Normans.
More recently, Cork’s economy has been dominated by high-tech industries and pharmaceuticals. The combination of a well-educated workforce and a deep harbour port has been very instrumental in Cork’s recent economic success.
