Accessible via a steep, 10-minute walk from the town centre, the Ambassador Hotel is housed in an imposing 3-storey building, which dates from 1872 and boasts a handsome, red brick and limestone façade. The lobby is cosy and welcoming, with gas-burning fires, and the corridors are wide and airy. The 70 spacious guestrooms are decorated in a traditional style, with patterned wallpaper, wood furniture, small sitting areas and coordinated floral curtains and bedding. All are clean and well maintained, as are the en suite bathrooms. The Embassy Bar has dark-wood panelling and a large bay window offering a panoramic view of the docks, river, railway line, church steeples and distant surrounding hills. Alternatively, the cocktail lounge, with book-filled shelves and Chesterfields by an open fire, is a quieter venue.
